The Legion celebrated St. Jean Baptiste Day with a little Greek flair. Jim Markham and Cody Gilmore put out a spectacular meal assisted by their spouses and other friends. The rain did not dampen the night. Phil Gale, Ian Kelso, Dorothy Blaise, Mac Grundy and Terry Denny were pleasing the crowd with some old familiar songs. Dennis Connolly who usually plays the drums in this band is now making his home at the Ste. Anne's Veterans Hospital and loves having visitors. Thanks to everyone who made this night exceptional.
Coming up next on July 8 is Chicken & Ribs which is always a hit. Reserve early to ensure your seat at 450-458-4882.

There were lots of celebrations recently with Rod Hodgson's birthday on the 18th, followed by Serges Bérubé who turned 65 on the 23rd and Robert & Liz Rozon celebrating 40 years of marital bliss on the 25th.

Please mark June 15th on your calendar as the next General Meeting which will start at 7 pm. This is where the announcement of the incoming executive is made. A note to all new members who have not yet been initiated, the initiations will not be made until the September General Meeting due the health problems of the membership chairman, who by the way is making great progress in his recovery. The executive invites you to start using the facilities now and sign up for some of the BBQ's that are planned.
Speaking of BBQ's, teams are still needed to cook and prepare for these meals. Curling players are very welcome to get on board. We need you. Call Joan at 450-458-4882 for the dates available to help. The revenue brought in from these dinners is what helps to keep the Legion going in the summer.
There is also a special request being made from one of the members who is trying to provide glasses as in spectacles for kids in Africa. If you have any old eye glasses or sun glasses, please drop them off at the Legion. There is a box set up for this project.
A D-Day luncheon was held at the Legion on Monday. Seventy five people came to pay tribute. This event was organized to honour the Veterans who landed June 6, 1944 on the beaches of Normandy. Veterans and their families turned out with the Veterans wearing their medals proudly. There was a beautiful mural hanging that showed the beaches of Normandy. Everyone present enjoyed their day. Until next time.

The Pub Quiz which is held on the last Wednesday of the month between October & April each year is not just a trivia night. It is an evening which raises money for many charities in the area. Happily to report, the group managed to raise a total of $1278.00.
The Poppy Committee has been busy also handing cheques to the Palliative care ($3000.00) and to the new medical centre ($1000.00) at the last Friday night dinner. Last Thursday was Joan Hughes' birthday and she was overwhelmed by the number of people who showed up to celebrate this occasion. Joan is a quiet person as everyone knows and not too many words are spoken but her emotions said everything. Teary eyed Joan declared she has never had a party like this in her life. Passing this message of thanks from Joan to all the members who made this a memorable time for her and to Cody Gilmore who kept this secret of surprise for so long and took care of all the arrangements and to Gerry Foliot for taking over the bar on her big day.

It's been a bit of a shocker week in that it's so quiet around here following the week of hustle and bustle with the Nationals. However, the Pub Quiz was fairly busy. Thanks to the organizers for using this Legion as the home base.
The Town of Hudson Bonspiel started on Sunday and the teams are just having a lot of fun. That is what this spiel is about. Meeting new people, having a good chat after the games and maybe win one or two along the way.
Information just out, Ste. Anne's Curling Club is shutting its doors after many, many years and is inviting teams to play in their final Red Eye 24 hour Tournament being held on April 15th at 9 pm until April 16th at 9 pm. For further info please contact at www.sadebcc.org. It's always sad when an old club shuts its doors.
Sign up sheets are up for the Closing Mixed Bonspiel. Don't miss this last chance to play in a mixed tournament.
Jim Markham is once again arranging his annual Stick Spiel. Jim does a lot of work at the Legion and is the number one volunteer bartender. He racks up the hours but is proud of his contribution and never says no. Thanks Jim.

As everyone probably knows by now, Team Quebec won the Legion Nationals with a 7- 0 winning streak. Team Saskatchewan was runner up with a 5-2 tally. The week was such a great success with people sharing stories, exchanging pins and memorabilia. The whole event wound up with a delicious dinner and prize presentations. A very big thanks go out to Glenn Ruiter and Barb Robinson for organizing the whole event and to all of the volunteers who made it possible. Most of all a special thanks to the Banque Nationale for their very generous contribution which made this championship the best ever. To all of the donations from local businesses , we thank you. To Tim Horton’s for supplying coffee & donuts what can be said but thanks. The list goes on & on, so it is easy to see how this project became the success that it was.
The week ended up with yet another dinner from a tired crew of workers and it too was great. Joan and Marge continue to put on these events time after time. Next one will be on April 15th with a Cabane à Sucre type meal with ham being the highlight. Mike Elliott supplies all the sweet stuff and taffy on ice is his specialty. Tickets are thirteen dollars and reservations can be made by calling 450-458-4882. This Wednesday ( March 30) is Pub Quiz which starts at 8 pm sharp.
The Town of Hudson Bonspiel runs from April 3-9. Hurry before it's too late to enter your team. Anyone can play, as long as they have some connection with Hudson. Each team must have at least one non curler. Sign up at the Legion or at Whitlock for a week of fun.
On behalf of everyone here at the Legion, our best wishes go out to Jeff Casselman's ( our bartender ) mom, Elly who is courageously battling cancer at this time. Jeff and Elly, our thoughts are with you.

The Legion National Championship is well underway. Unfortunately, at the time this article is written it's only day one, so there is really no clear leader at this time. Check the website for up to date information at www.hudsonlegion.com. The players are really keen and the curling is spectacular. The opening ceremonies went well with founding member of the curling club, Bob Putnam throwing the first rock. Attendance was high. Everyone seems to having a good time. The championship winds up Thursday.
Don't forget to reserve your ticket for Friday night dinner March 25 with chicken and shrimp on the menu.
For some unknown reason the Cribbage night had its smallest crowd of the year with only six tables present. The winner was Ann Osborne with Phil Gale being the runner up. Peggy Denis and Jim Murray were tied for zero points and had to cut cards to determine a winner and Peggy won.
Pub Quiz will be played next Wednesday evening starting at 8 pm.

St. Patrick's Day week started off with a bang. The newly crowned Queen and her court were table hopping so people would get to know them. What a lovely group of young ladies. Mr. Pat O'Grady was chosen as Irishman of the Year and proved to be the right candidate for this years parade which does take place this Saturday starting on Cote St. Charles making it's way down Main Road and winding up at Cunningham's Pub. Show your support to the organizing crew from Cunningham's, Jim Beauchamp and Andrew Dumais. They do a fantastic job. As did our own team last Friday led by Joan Hughes who put on a spectacular dinner at the St. Pat's night party. The musicians were fabulous and let's not forget the little darlings, the Irish dancers who always bring a little extra charm to this event.
The next Friday dinner will be served on Friday March 25 at 6:30 pm. Make your reservations now by calling 450-458-4882. Chicken and shrimp will be on the menu.

Coming right behind that is the Legion National Curling Championship with teams from across Canada going head to head. Teams are arriving at the Legion Sunday morning for breakfast after which the opening ceremony will take place with Bob Putnam throwing the first rock and then the games begin. Everything is posted on the website (www.hudsonlegion.com). Don't forget that this Legion has its very own team in this spiel so do come out to cheer them on.

Boy oh boy, this Legion just keeps winning and winning.
With Jack Crombie making it to the Legion Nationals, Melanie Maclean making it to the Junior Nationals and now we have Rob Maclean, Danny Belliveau and their team going to the Senior Nationals in Digby Nova Scotia. Lynda Putnam and her team won the "C" section beating out Team Mansell who was runner up and Team Robinson won consolation in the "F" section. Congratulations everyone.
Joan served up a delicious chicken & ribs dinner last Friday with Jeff, Gwen, and Lindsay serving up the plates. Next up is the St. Patrick's Irishman of the Year dinner on Friday March 11 at 6:30 pm. This promises to be a fun filled evening including an Irish duo featuring Vincent Griffin formerly of Irish Rover fame and Bernadette Short's lovely Irish dancers. Tickets must be picked up in advance.
Anyone wishing to advertise in the Legion National booklet is asked to contact Barb at 450-458-5032. This fund raising book helps to off set the expenses of the event.

Don't forget Pub Quiz this Wednesday, Feb. 23 at 8 pm. All you need is a team of four people who know a little something about a lot of topics and show up. It's all over by 10 pm. The cost is $3.00 to participate with the proceeds being donated to a different charity each month.
Plans are well underway for the Legion Nationals but the usual shortage of volunteers weighs upon us. If you can spare some time during the week of March 20-25, please inform Barb Robinson at 450-458-5032 or sign up on the sheet posted on the board at the Legion. What's needed are drivers for the teams, kitchen help for the canteen, half & half draw ticket sellers, souvenir table representatives, and hostesses or hosts through out the day and other requirements. Members from other clubs are welcome to jump on board and help out with this National Championship. Your participation is encouraged.
Dee Robinson won the liquor/wine basket that the Junior Provincial girls team had on display. It brought in over $500.00 to help with their expenses out West and they are grateful for that.
Old time curler, but not so old in years. Wayne Cox passed away suddenly at the age of sixty eight this past week. Deepest sympathies go out to Wayne's family. After all these years Wayne still maintained his membership at this Legion which he never forget as he had so many memories of his curling years.

News flash, this Legion now has an entry into the Legion National Curling Championships being held from March 20-25 in Hudson this year. The team representing Branch 115 are Greg Wilson, Serge Berube, Jen Baumeister and Jack Crombie who throws lead rocks but skips the team. Serge has being trying so hard for years to put together a compatible team and has finally found the right combination. A very special congratulations to him after all these years of trying. A well fought game for this final position was against another very strong team skipped by Tony Marquis and his team of Bill Langdon, John Coutts and Richard Hatrick. It was a thriller of a game with a chance in the fifth end for Tony to take a very big end but this was not to be. Spectators were treated to an exciting afternoon of curling.
Not to be out done, Bill Driver and his team of David Bradshaw, Bill Hesketh and Mike Devine won the "A" section in the Masters Montreal Regional Championships therefore, making their way to the Provincials being held in Sherbrooke at the end of the month. Congratulations to all of these curlers.

Reports on Robbie Burns were great.
Thanks to all the folks who helped like Linda Eames, John Dalgarno, Mike Elliott, Helen Goff, Gail Smith, the Connors, the Rasmussens and of course Joan & Marge and their wonderful staff. To all the entertainers who put on a good show, much appreciated. This was the largest attendance in recent history for a special event. It goes to show a small Legion is capable of competing with the best when it comes to serving a good meal to a very large crowd. Bravo. Welcome to all the newcomers and please come again.
The next Friday Night dinner takes place on Friday Feb. 11. RSVP soon at 450-458-4882. Salmon will be served.
There was lots of curling activity this past weekend with four very competitive teams playing off for the last spot in the Legion National's. The final game will be played this Sunday, Feb. 6 at 1:00 pm with team Crombie versus team Marquis. This game will be very well fought as it was last week coming down to the last rock. Last Friday was a very successful night starting off with a lovely dinner followed by a great evening of Bingo. Attendance was good and play continued till all the prizes were gone. Aline Beauchamp & Rick Cameron got thrown in at the last minute to take control of the night due to the quick departure of Rollie to attend a family funeral. Aline provided the calling of the numbers with her beautiful daughter at her side dropping the numbered balls. Thanks to Mike Normandeau, Lynda Putnam & Jane Kirkwood for their assistance, to Ace Hardware and IGA for their part in making this evening happen.

With the sun blazing and a little chill in the air, the annual Remembrance Day parade marched proudly down the centre of Main Road to be received by a large contingent of greeters. New President Peter Mansell with his calming voice led the formalities. The Black Watch cadets were out in full force and these young people do make the day complete. Thanks to everyone for helping to make this day special for all of the living veterans and to the families of veterans past. Remembrance Day dinner was served on Saturday to an almost a full house. The wreaths are still on view outside at the Cenotaph. If you missed the Parade, drop by and see the Cenotaph and share your own special thoughts at the site at 11 am November 11th.

Welcome to the new curlers, some may not have started to curl yet but don't worry there will be lots of ice time for everyone. Please feel free to direct any queries to Glen Ruiter the Curling President. Glen is renown for his patience and great disposition. There will be lots of special events being held this year, so the need for volunteers for various jobs will come up especially when the Legion Nationals are here.
Best wishes to Ken Baxter for a speedy recovery.
