All is quiet on the home front.

The D-Day lunch went off very well due to the organization from Rod Hodgson and his friend Patrick. It is so nice to see these Veterans still able to come out to this event. It is always a thrill to see them and feel what they accomplished for our freedom. It is an honour to host them.

A nice crowd gathered for a very lovely meal last Friday night which was prepared by Jim Markham & Cody Gilmore. Thanks to them & their helpers. At this time, unfortunately, no volunteers have offered to do the next dinner, Therefore, until someone comes forward, keep watching this column for updates. Sorry for the inconvenience.

Don't forget to visit the Farmers Market each Thursday at the corner on Main & Selkirk.

Thanks to all the people who made the Jubilee dinner a grand success.

The evening climaxed with the dedication of the Queen's Diamond Jubilee Medal to Maxine Bredt who graciously accepted it from Mayor Michael Elliott. She was ever so proud and rightly so for all that she has done in and outside this community.

Reservations are being taken for this Friday's souvlaki dinner. Call now at 450-458-4882. Tickets are just $14.00 for this full course meal. There is still a dire need for volunteer cooks for some remaining dates that are not filled.

Volunteers are needed to help at the Canada Day festivities. There is a sign up sheet at the Legion.

The Farmers Market is in great shape with more and more vendors coming in as the crops ripen. It is open every Thursday at the corner of Selkirk & Main from 3-7 pm.

The curling shed walls are finished. What a job. Every man and woman worked diligently for hours upon hours. Some days you may have thought you were at Air Canada with the number of pilots that were out there putting their hidden talents to work. It was just fantastic to see the comradeship of all the Hardy Rocks working together. Part two of the upgrade to the rink will start this week with new cooling pipes to be installed. Contact Serge if you can help.

A salmon dinner hosted by your Executive will take place this Friday, May 11 at 6:30 pm. RSVP at 450-458-4882.

April 23, 2012

That's it now, the end, the Hardy Rock curling finished up the season last Friday with a bang. Many thanks to Jim Markham for keeping the Legion hopping for the last two weeks. The finals were played with a delicious pot luck lunch organized by Jim & Meredith Royds and a list of helpers so long as pretty well everyone chipped in one way or another. See you at the BBQ's this summer. By the way, volunteers are needed to help with these dinners.

Crib night also played their last hands for this season with Rob Wyeth and Phil Gale tying for first place with 121 points each and Rick Cameron taking third place with 97 points. They all promised to water carefully, the lovely hanging baskets that they won. Thanks went out to all the people who contributed sandwiches, snacks and prizes through out the winter months. Also a big thank you to Rollie, Sheila and Rick & Aline for contributing their time and effort all season long. Crib night returns on the 19th of October.

Pub Quiz as usual will be played on Wednesday April 25th at 8 pm sharp and will return to action again next fall.

Just because all of these events are over doesn't mean that the Legion closes too. Wrong, it stays open as usual everyday during the summer months from 4-7 Mon. thru Sat. and 11-7 on Sunday. Please do drop by from time to time.

Friday Night dinner (Veal Parmesan ) is on tap this week at 6:30 pm. RSVP 450-458-4882.

Once again the Friday night diners said it was the best one yet. Thanks to Joan, Marge, Eric for a very enjoyable evening. The next dinner is slated on April 27th and the meal is a crowd favourite, Veal Parmesan Chef's Style. By the way, this is the time of year to say adieu to Marge and Joan for the summer months. This will be their last contribution until the Fall. RSVP 450-458-4882.

The night Curlers went out in fine style on Saturday evening with some classic curling for the spectators and some upscale hors d'ouvres for everyone. Many thanks go out to Glenn Ruiter and Barb Robinson who served as organizers and MC's for the night. All of the prizes were distributed saving the best for last. A lovely presentation and sentimental gifts were received by Rob Maclean who is stepping down as the Junior coach, liaison and mentor to all the junior curlers on Sunday mornings after twelve years of service to this program. Oh, yes Rob and his team of Dan Belliveau, Alan Jones and John Burgess won the Club Championship in a hard fought battle against Team Putnam. Congratulations to all of the winning teams.

The real winners were the recipients and that means everyone who enjoyed those yummy hors d'ouvres produced and served by Sharlene Dearling, Deborah MacDonald, Jodie Hall and their husbands. That's it now until next season except for the die hard Hardy Rocks who keep curling till the end of the week. Jim Markham has been instrumental in arranging these year end bonspiels as well as being acting bartender & BBQ chef. He sure knows how to keep the interest level up there. Thanks and Happy Birthday Jim.

The Chili cook off contest evening turned out to be a success.
Many thanks to all of the participants for their generous donation of chili. They were all very good with Lynn Sanquist taking first prize and Jim Beauchamps of Cunningham's Pub taking a close second prize.
To all of the Legion staff who worked diligently through this event and to the volunteers in particular Marge Crombie who always works above and beyond and to the Hardy Rocks who put up the tables and chairs and of course Jean Chevalier for his own personal contribution, many thanks. The "G" Strings never get enough accolades for their music so "cheers" to them for being there at every dinner held on the last Friday of the month for years and years.
The Mason Dixon Line Band was tremendous and finished the evening with lots of great music and had the crowd filling up the dance floor. To all the contributors of door prizes and lovely plants for the tables, what else is there to say but thanks again.

The contestants were Sauve's Restaurant, IGA, Peter & Gord Stephenson, Exit, Everyday Gourmet, Lynn Sandquist, Jim Beauchamps from Cunninghams, the Willow Inn, Hudson Fire Department, Dave Croyden and Donna P. Curling is soon to be over now that the Town of Hudson Bonspiel has finished. This used to be the last curling event of the year for both clubs with tons of teams playing and a big party bash to wind down the year. Let's try and get back into the spirit next year and try to get more teams on the ice. The idea is to introduce new curlers to the game so that they may consider joining a club the following season. This year only eighteen teams participated with Team Langdon winning the "A" division. All participants enjoyed the event.

The Hardy Rock closing luncheon will be held on Thursday April 5th at noon and the regular Curling closing will be held on Saturday April 14th with a new format this year. Check out the website for further information at www.hudsonlegion.com.

The Ladies proudly took home the Jackson trophy which was played for on March 26. Congratulations to all who played in this event.

December 12, 2011

Once again the week was very busy. Lots of curling and lots of partying had everyone in the holiday mood. Rollie in particular was very happy with twelve tables turning out for the Xmas cribbage. In fact many players came in from the West Island which is how well known it's becoming. The winners were Jim Murray with 92 points, Joan Bazar with 87 points and in third place was Aline Beauchamp with 82 points. All the winners went home with their Christmas turkeys. It was a very good evening.

Glenn Ruiter also did a super job running "Winnie's  office party". The ugly hat that no one wants to win was won by Jen Baumeister handed over from last year’s winner. Now it is Jen's turn to add a new decoration to the hat and present it to next year’s loser, I mean winner. Anyway, everyone went home with a present and very good memories of Winnie.

There are three liquor baskets on display with tickets available for your chance to win one of the lovely baskets decorated by Sharon Graham. All going well, the baskets will be drawn this Friday.

The Lady Allstars wound up their season with a lovely lunch hosted by the Legion. Thanks to Judy Sargent & Barb Robinson for organizing the table decorations and master of ceremonies and just hosting the day, to the Hardy Rocks for their part in making the day a true success, and to Joan & Marge for their usual good job.

There is one more Legion Dinner before Christmas this Friday with Beef Steak Pie or Steak and Kidney Pie being served. You must make your choice when reserving. Bingo is supposed to happen after dinner at 8 pm. Check back in for a possible relaxing meal tentatively scheduled on Dec. 30th. If there are not enough people reserved, it won't happen. This will be the last chance to get together at the Legion for dinner until next year.

Merry Christmas, Happy Hanukah and Happy New Year to all members from your Executive and staff.

As the curling finals are being played, Xmas Crib will be taking place in the main hall, starting at 7:30 sharp. A shorter evening is planned so that participants can join in 'Winnie's Christmas Office Party' which will end the night. Just bring a wrapped gift around $10.00 value and place it under the tree in order to play the gift exchange game. It sounds like a real fun night.

Next Friday features Beef Steak Pie and following dinner the Xmas Bingo will start at 8 pm. Prizes include turkeys. This also promises to be an exciting night. Please reserve your seat for dinner by calling 450-458-4882.

The Town lit up in beautiful colours just as dinner was being served last Friday Night. Kisses were landing on the cheeks of Joan & Marge for the lovely meal they prepared from many of the guests. There was another meal and Bingo scheduled for this Friday but there was not enough interest to have it. Therefore, it is canceled. Everything has been moved to Friday December 16th. The menu will be individual Beef Steak Pie ( beef & kidney if you reserve in advance). Dinner is served at 6 :30 sharp with the Christmas Bingo to follow at 8 pm. Turkeys are some of  the prizes. Let's make it happen this time.

Pub Quiz is happening on Wednesday Nov, 30 at 8 pm sharp with the questions coming from your host team of Three Guys And A Babe. See you tonight.

The Curling is quickly reaching the Xmas break. The Ham & Turkey Spiel starts next Monday night and will finish up on Friday the 9 th with Winnie's Office Party starting after the games. The Xmas Crib will be happening while the curling is going on and Rollie has it planned that both groups will basically finish at the same time leading up to Winnie's party. To participate in this fun party, everyone brings an unmarked Xmas wrapped gift and places it under the tree after which an exchange will happen. It's a ton of fun, but remember you must bring a gift for not more than $ $10.00-15.00. If you just want to remember Winnie and are not curling or playing Crib just pop down around 9 pm with your gift and join in.

It was a very busy week at the Legion. There was a tremendous turn out for Mary's going away party. The food was outstanding. The gift was appropriate and amazing. But best of all was the look on Mary's face when she saw so many friends in the room, It will be a sad day for everyone when Mary makes her final trip to the airport to return home to her native England. She will be surely missed. Thank you for your volunteer work Mary and all of your kindness over the years. It is not good bye but au revoir for now.

The Remembrance Day dinner followed with a little smaller crowd than usual. Too bad, because the meal was exceptional. Didn't that dessert taste magnificent. Wonder who made it! Thanks to Marge Crombie, Joan Hughes, Barbara Robinson with the help of her friends Heather & Richard  for getting it all together. There were many hands in the background putting up tables, setting them and getting the equipment set up in the hall. Peter Mansell, the President of the Legion was very pleased with the whole format of the night.

The Parade went off without a hitch. The weather was glorious. Seeing the marchers round the bend leading up to the Legion always sends chills down the spine. The pride of the marchers is quite overwhelming and rightly so. The ceremonies and laying of the wreathes by dignitaries was flawless. Again many thanks to the Black Watch Cadets, the Scouts & Girl Guides for their participation in this annual event and to all the people behind the scenes.

Many thanks to the young Canadian veterans returning from Afghanistan for what they did in the name of Democracy.

Legions across Canada paid tribute to these men and women who have since returned home to their families. A moderate turnout was in place last Saturday to recognize the accomplishments of the veterans. Corporal Daniel Heron of the Royal Montreal regiment was representing those troops from this area. Daniel's family was also here to pay tribute. There is a total of nine Afganistan veterans from the Hudson St. Lazare area.

President Peter Mansell delivered a short but concise speech to all after which a light BBQ was served. Thanks to Peter Mansell and Lise Bernier, John Dalgarno & Linda Eames, and to Rod Hodgson for putting the day together.
