This event has been taking place in Montreal since 1925. The objective is to win the Edinburgh Trophy which is awarded to the curling club which accumulates the greatest number of points based on the winning margins of all the teams that it had entered in the competition as well as possible bonus points for the number of teams that participate. Here is the latest news that you should know:
- the executive committee will soon be sending out to all the members an update on the outcome of the Town Hall meeting that took place at the end of last season as well as the status of the improvements that were planned for our curling facility. In addition, information about the upcoming season and a new fee structure designed to encourage new curlers to join our club will be announced shortly as well.
- more than 40 persons attended the curling club Town Hall meeting on Tuesday, April 23. Most of the discussions centered on the state of the curling facilities, including the ice condition, the installation of the dehumidifier, the dressing rooms etc. In addition, a lot of good ideas were exchanged on the topic of membership, the possibility of adding new curling leagues on Saturdays or Sundays and a new category of members for social curling only. The meeting finished at about 9:15 pm with a discussion about the club’s financial situation, the need to ensure sufficient revenues to pay for the required improvements as well as the need to attract some sponsors. All of the input gained during this meeting will be used by the club’s executive committee to develop a five year action plan, which will be presented to the members. Everyone was reminded that if they have any ideas or if they would like to help out by getting involved with the executive committee they are always welcome.

- the 2012-2013 curling season finished on Saturday, April 13 with four good curling matches, an awards presentation as well as a great closing banquet, which included delicious food prepared by Jodi Hall, Wayne Morin, Sharlene and Wade Dearling and their helpers all this accompanied by music from Karen Cromar’s band “Nightshift”.
- congratulations to Rob Maclean and the rest of his rink, which included John Burgess, Allan Jones and Dan Belliveau, for winning the Club Championship. Also congratulations to Matt Stenberg and the rest of his team, which included Mike Simms, Zbig Jasiukajc and Andrew Bradley, for wining the Club Championship consolation final. - congratulations to Lynda Putnam, who together with Jocelyne Beck, Dave Bradshaw and Laurie Partington won the Closing Mixed Bonspiel “A” final. Also congratulations to Peter Mansell (sparing for MIjke Normandeau) and his rink, which included Jacques Labrosse, Steve Shaw and Barbara Mason, for winning the Closing Mixed Bonspiel “B” final. - congratulations to Steve Sewell and the rest of his rink, which included Jeannot Fournier, Barbara Mason and Sharlene Dearling, for winning the Gray Trophy. A photo of the winning team is posted on the Mixed Curling page.
- a link to a collection of some great photos taken during the Kurling for Kids funspiel fundraising event has been posted on the Photos and Archives page.
- due to a low number of participants, the Town of Hudson Bonspiel, which was scheduled to take place between Apr. 14 and Apr. 20, will take place instead at the beginning of next season, that is at the start of October, 2013. Anyone who has any ideas or comments about ensuring the viability of this event is encouraged to share them with Barbara Robinson (HLCC) or Ken Flewelling (WGCC).

2013 Kurling for Kids fundraising funspiel report

Wasn't that a party!?!?
The inaugural Hudson Legion Kurling for Kids event was an overwhelming success with our concerted efforts achieving more than 250% of our $5000 goal - to date! (And I was initially worried about even being able to achieve $5000! Silly me!) We will raise at least $12,550, with still a few sums to come in. THANK YOU, EVERYONE!
I must take a moment to especially thank a few people who stepped in to help and made the event what it was:
- the Ley-Ruiter family for donating most of the silent auction items and running the auction that raised an additional $1091;
- to my score-keeper/ref Bill Sansom who along with Ann Austen taught all the newbies how to curl and keep safe on the ice;
- to my daytime volunteer barman, Jim Markham, who donated his tips to the cause;
- to Fred & Jeannette Albert for handling lunch, and
- to Barbara Robinson for a great spaghetti dinner, which offset almost all of our meal expenses.
Thank you to the many volunteers who helped them, and to the curlers who raised the funds that will help so many sick kids. Thank you to all of you for your contributions, large and small!
A HUGE thanks goes out to the dozen or more musicians who showed up and donated their time to post-dinner entertainment, and rocked out “jamming” until 2 A.M.!!! The extra bar revenues were certainly appreciated by the Legion, who donated the use of the facilities for K4K. In addition, a box of unused food was donated to our local palliative care kitchen who were most grateful. WIN-WIN-WIN!
And speaking of winners, the teams who garnered the honour of trophies were:
1st Place: Bill's Hotshots, with Bill Driver, Marion Kelso, Susan Kelso (a former child patient at the Montreal Children's, imported from Ottawa) and non-curler Caitlyn Bowser (who also doubled as official photographer).
2nd Place: Timmbits, with Alex Timm, Mellie Stephensen, Nelson Wells, and non-curler Mark Timm

3rd place, the team with highest score, with losses: The Freeze, with Ann Austen and non-curlers Maureen Godbout, Franny Daoust and Robert Haslehurst.

2013 Gordon International Curling Bonspiel report

This weekend, the Gordon International Medal was won by the USA for the second time since 1982.
This is the 117th time that the completion has taken place and the 29th occasion the USA has won. The US teams that visited us on Friday for the friendly games were from Schenectady and Norfolk, Saturday saw us play host to Cape Cod Curling Club and Broomstones Curling Club Wayland, Massachusetts.
By the way if you think we had ice problems this season, you should know that the Norfolk club was destroyed by fire last year and they are in the process of rebuilding! It was a real compliment to our curling club and Legion that the teams playing here on Friday when asked where they would like to play chose us.
I think that all of the Canadian curlers would agree that this US victory will only strengthen the bonds of comradeship and sportsmanship that is at the core of this annual event. As usual Sandy excelled in the kitchen to provide yet another amazing feast. Next year the completion will be played in Albany/Schenectady so until then, good curling!

The 2013 Strathcona Cup:
an analysis of the winning strategy

The last draws of the 2013 edition of the Strathcona Cup were played about three weeks ago and when all was said and done the Scottish “tourists” have all gone back home with the trophy after outscoring their Canadian opponents 2876 - 2620 in terms of the aggregate number of rocks over the course of 426 draws played from one end of Canada to the other. The Hudson Legion Curling Club had the distinction of hosting two of those draws and we can proudly say that our curlers won both of them.
By winning this year’s tournament, the Scots can now claim having won the Cup 10 times compared to the 11 wins by Canadians since the inception of this friendly competition more than a century ago. We captured the game results from the above website and analyzed them in order to get a clearer picture of the strategy that the Scots used to come out victorious. An overview of that analysis can be seen in the table below:

Note: the number of points scored calculated using the results posted on the Strathcona Cup web site does not match the official results because some game results from the East tour are missing.
It is encouraging to see that in terms of game outcomes, the Canadian teams had actually won more games than the Scots, especially in the West tour. What this indicates is that in order to understand how the “tourists” played to win the trophy we need to analyze the individual game results and more specifically the winning margins. Using the Tableau Software data analysis application available on the internet we have prepared the interactive graph shown below which displays the number of wins for each country grouped by how many points they won their games.

As it is easy to see, of the 197 games that Canada won, 92 were decided by only 1 or 2 points and only 22 games were decided by 7 points or more. On the other hand, of the 192 games that the Scots won, the winning margin was 1-2 points in only 55 cases. However, in 50 of their wins, the winning margin was 7 points or more. In other words, when the Scots lost they usually lost by a small margin but when they won, they won big. That’s the same strategy that guarantees success in the annual Grand Match.
It’s also interesting to point out that amongst the 15 teams from Scotland that took part in the event, only three were responsible for most of the winning margin. Team 3 on the West Tour, Team 2 on the Central Tour and Team 4 on the East Tour combined contributed 188, or 75% of the 249 point final margin of victory.
